Using overripe bananas helps ensure you’re getting the highest natural sugar content, which gives this semi-sweet, delicious dessert-y bread more balance and that memorable taste that you’re searching for. There’s a reason this is my most popular recipe! Eating a warm slice (or two) feels like a hug from my mom, and I know for many of you, it evokes that same level of comfort.

This recipe is also incredibly easy to pull off, without compromising on taste. You’ll end up with a perfectly moist, filling chocolate chip banana bread. Whenever I want to show someone I’m thinking about them — welcoming a new neighbor, visiting a sick relative, celebrating a friend’s birthday — this is often my go-to recipe because it is so universally popular!

Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Recipe FAQ

Can I make recipe substitutions?

If you want to lighten it up, feel free to omit the oil (or sub in applesauce) and replace the egg with 2 egg whites! We do this all the time, and it turns out great. You can also use whole wheat flour in place of the all-purpose flour.

You could also experiment with the type of chocolate chips you use, depending on your preference. Some people also like to add more than the recipe calls for, but I find this to be the ideal balance between the chips, banana, and bread.

If you want to try other forms of chocolate — such as Reese’s Cups — read on for a few ideas!

How do you keep chocolate chip banana bread fresh?

I’ve always found that this recipe keeps well simply wrapped in foil on the counter for a few days.If you know you won’t finish it in that amount of time (and don’t want to share!), you can easily freeze it.

Can I make banana bread muffins instead?

Yes! You can easily adapt this recipe to make banana bread muffins! Just adjust the baking time to 20 minutes.

How do you freeze this chocolate chip banana bread recipe?

This bread freezes REALLY well. If you have a ton of bananas and are wanting to make multiple loaves, it’s a great idea to freeze some for later! Wrap the cooled loaf in plastic wrap and then in foil. It should keep for a couple of months, but the longer you wait, the less it may taste like the original, so don’t forget about it!

When you’re ready to eat it, let it thaw at room temperature before slicing. You could also freeze individually wrapped slices for convenience — it’s more work up front but you may thank yourself later.

There are so many fun ways to jazz up banana bread! Here are a few ideas:

✔️ Mix in toffee bits. The toffee will melt during baking and leave sweet little spots of caramel.

✔️ Pour half of the batter into the loaf pan. Sprinkle 1/4 cup of cinnamon sugar over the batter and then pour the rest of the batter on top. This will create a delicious cinnamon swirl.

✔️ Glaze! Add a peanut butter glaze or a chocolate glaze or a maple glaze. It’s amazing how a simple glaze can change a loaf of bread into a beautiful loaf cake!

✔️ Add 1/2 teaspoon of almond extract, 1/2 teaspoon of butter extract, and 1/2 cup of sprinkles to make funfetti bread!

FAQs

Why did my banana bread flop? ›

If you do not store your ingredients (i.e. flour) in airtight containers, it can lead to problems. For example, flour in an open package can absorb moisture from the air. Moisture-contaminated flour can add extra moisture to a banana bread. Excess moisture can result in a banana bread sinking.

Why does banana bread crack when baking? ›

First, why the crack occurs: Since quick breads and pound cake batters tend to be thick and dense, the exterior bakes first. But as the center of the cake continues to bake, releasing moisture, it rises, pushing through the top crust, and creating a crack.

Why doesn't banana bread cook in the middle? ›

Using too much banana could make your bread heavy and damp in the center, causing it to appear undercooked and unappealing. If you have bananas leftover, you can always freeze them for later use.

How many bananas are in Chrissy Teigen's banana bread? ›

The tldr; is that she needed 6 very ripe bananas to work on this recipe, but as you know you can not just buy overly ripe bananas at the store, so she went to Twitter and called on her followers.

Why does my banana bread not taste good? ›

Skimping on the sugar can dry out a loaf of banana bread and leave it flavorless. It turns out, sugar does more than just make things sweeter. When it comes to banana bread, cutting back on sugar will leave you with a dry loaf totally devoid of any distinguishable flavor.

Why is my banana bread still gooey after an hour? ›

Bake for longer: If the center of your banana bread is still gooey, you may need to bake it for a longer time. Check the bread every 5-10 minutes by inserting a toothpick into the center. If it comes out with moist crumbs, continue baking until the toothpick comes out clean or with a few dry crumbs.

Why is my banana bread dry and hard? ›

When it comes to banana bread, moisture is key, and the ratio of flour to banana makes all the difference in getting the perfect banana bread consistency. If you use too much flour, you'll end up with really dry banana bread, and If you don't use enough flour, your banana bread will be way too wet.

Why is my banana bread moist but crumbly? ›

Using too much flour makes for an extra crumbly bread.

If you're tapping your measuring cup to level out flour as you measure, or you're pushing down the piled-up powder, you'll end up using too much of it. I packed my flour for this loaf, and what I got was a crumbly cake with a dry crust all around.

Why baking soda in banana bread? ›

Baking soda: Baking soda acts as a leavener, which means it helps the banana bread rise. Salt: A pinch of salt enhances the overall flavor, but it won't make the loaf taste salty.\

Why is there a hole in the middle of my banana bread? ›

Overmixing is a common problem with quick breads and is certain to happen with an electric mixer. Use only 15 to 20 light hand strokes with a spoon when mixing the combined liquid and combined dry ingredients together.

How do I get my banana bread to cook in the middle? ›

Try lowering the temperature by 25°F, and bake for a slightly longer time. If you are using a dark colored pan like many non-stick pans it will cause the outside to brown more quickly while the inside stays raw. The same fix will work, just lower the temperature.

Are bananas ever too ripe for banana bread? ›

As it sits at room temperature, starches convert to sugars, making the fruit sweeter and softer. These brown spots, often seen as a sign of spoilage, are actually a dead giveaway of peak banana bread potential. But, there is a limit. Black bananas or rotten bananas are a no-go.

Why does my bread flop? ›

Some ovens run hotter than its settings, some cooler. If the oven is too hot the loaf will be brown and crispy on the outside but doughy in the middle and may collapse as it cools.
